Roots Of Resistance

Full Spectrum Community Doula Certification

Birthwork as Resistance. Skill as Liberation.

The Roots of Resistance Doula Academy is an 12-week, full-spectrum community doula training (hybrid model) designed for birthworkers who are ready to move beyond comfort measures and into real skill, real advocacy, and real medical literacy.

This is NOT your typical doula training.

This is a movement.

Created by two seasoned birthworkers — an ancestral midwife-in-training and a student midwife with nearly a two decades of advanced birth experience — this program blends:

Full-spectrum doula education

Deep medical knowledge and clinical literacy

Hospital navigation, language, and advocacy skills

Traditional African-American postpartum healing practices

Breastfeeding foundations + childbirth education

C-section recovery training (CRISP model)

Hands-on bodywork, belly binding, and bone closing

A guaranteed pathway into the Community Doula Program for a PAID 12 weeks internship

We train doulas who can walk into ANY birthing environment and stand ten toes down — confident, informed, grounded, and unshakable.

This is birthwork as resistance.

This is community care as liberation.

This is the future of doula training.

Certified Herbalist, Full Spectrum Doula, Midwife Assistant, Medical Assistant

Tabatha Seppala

Tabatha brings nearly two decades of birthwork experience to her role as Lead Instructor, where she supports the training, development, and mentorship of emerging doulas. Her work is rooted in both clinical knowledge and ancestral midwifery traditions, creating a holistic and culturally grounded approach to doula education.

Tabatha studied in Mexico with a Mayan partera curandera (indigenous midwife & healer), learning sacred womb-healing practices such as cerrados (closing ceremonies), baños (herbal baths), and traditional postpartum techniques. As an ordained minister and certified herbalist, she integrates spirituality, plant medicine, and ceremony into her mentorship work.

With a background as a certified Midwife’s Assistant and Full-Spectrum Doula, Tabatha has strong clinical foundations, including experience at The Volusia Tribe Community Pregnancy Center. She is cross-certified as a Herbalist and Medical Assistant, with studies in Complementary & Alternative Health.

A proud Afro-Boricua birthworker, fluent in Spanish and ASL, she ensures her mentorship and care are inclusive, accessible, and culturally responsive. She believes every birth is a sacred rite of passage—and that doulas deserve mentorship that honors skill, spirit, and ancestral wisdom.

Cherise Gordon

CLC, Doula, Student Midwife, Birth Justice Advocate

Cherise Gordon (she/her) is a full-spectrum birthworker, certified lactation counselor, student midwife, traditional rootworker, and nationally recognized Medicaid expert who has been serving families for seven years with depth, intention, and cultural grounding. She brings a unique blend of medical literacy, ancestral wisdom, and community-based advocacy that shapes every aspect of her teaching.

Cherise’s journey in birthwork began over a decade ago through the lineages of traditional healing and rootwork. For more than 10 years, she has practiced African-American traditional healing arts, integrating ancestral knowledge into modern perinatal support. This foundation guides her commitment to protecting birthing people from systemic harm, centering autonomy, and restoring culturally rooted care.

As a Certified Lactation Counselor with over 11 years of personal breastfeeding experience and 8 years of professional lactation support, Cherise is widely respected for her ability to guide families through complex feeding journeys—including NICU experiences, post-C-section latching challenges, and tethered oral tissue support. Her breastfeeding expertise is embedded in all full-spectrum training she offers.

Professionally, Cherise is considered the leading expert in Florida Medicaid for doulas. She has personally credentialed dozens of doulas, billed over $200,000 in Medicaid claims, and trained more than 60 providers across the states on Medicaid navigation, billing, reimbursement, and community program development. Her work in Medicaid reform and access has made her a key voice in health equity and reproductive justice spaces.

Cherise is also a pioneer in C-section recovery support, drawing from her lived experience with four cesareans as well as her clinical education. She developed specialized postpartum protocols that blend medical knowledge, traditional healing, abdominal support, and mobility training—addressing a major gap in the doula field.

As a business strategist and agency owner, Cherise has built and scaled community-based doula programs, trained future agency leaders, and mentored dozens of birthworkers on creating sustainable, profitable doula careers. Her background in public health and health equity shapes her mission: to ensure that birthworkers have not only the skills, but also the power, protection, and economic freedom to thrive.

Her teaching is bold.

Her approach is holistic.

Her commitment is ancestral.

And her impact is transforming birthwork from the inside out.
